Jamie 21 July Westgate – Slit Woods Circular
Westgate, Middlehope Lane and Slit Woods
Tuesday 21st July 2026
Starting Point: Westgate. Parking is best in the small carpark across the bridge if you turn south just before the Hare & Hounds (signposted Brotherlee). NY 910,379
A varied walk of c.5 miles Height gain: c.700ft
Walk Route: We walk back to the village street, turn left as far as the Caravan Park entrance, cross the road and follow the track signposted Slit Woods. Carry on up the (steep) field to the junction at the end of Side Head. This would be the best place to meet up with walkers wishing to shorten their distance, at about 10.30. We carry on up this track towards Middlehope Lane passing several large, but passable, puddles. At Middlehope Lane we turn right and follow the road uphill to the next right turn onto a gravel track. Follow this until we reach another right turn down to Slit Woods, then follow the track alongside the burn down to Westgate and back to the car park.”
