Parkhead and Stanhope Burn

19 May 2026

Important:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week.  Please consult the weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk as we are often able to update the website to say if the walk is going ahead the evening before.

Walk Route: We park near the Parkhead Station House cafe.  From there we walk west along the 1846 railway track, which was the highest standard gauge railway in England, before turning south and descending to the Stanhope Burn, which we cross using an interesting bridge.  There is then a steep but short climb through the heather before we pick up a gravel road which takes us back over the burn.

A good but steep path takes us up beside the Heathery Burn, where a large collection of Late Bronze Age weapons and tools was discovered and excavated between 1859 and 1872.  Finally we return to our cars following another railway track which opened on 15 May 1834, and closed in 1951.
