SUMMARY:4 August Stanhope via Shittlehope Burn and Crawley Edge
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 4Th August 2026 \nStanhope via Shittlehope Burn and Crawley Edge. \nImportant:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled\, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week.  Please consult the weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk to confirm the walk is going ahead.  Note we are often able to update the website the evening before. \nWalk Route: A  countryside walk round Stanhope. Starting at the car park at the Dales centre\, Stanhope we walk to Newlandside  Hall then on to Parson Byers\, Shittlehope Burn and along Crawley Edge above the quarries before returning to the Dales centre. There is a steep climb of 80 metres after we cross the river Wear near the beginning and a steep downhill section towards the end. For those who want a flatter route there are alternatives and several  return routes at various places. \nDate: Tuesday\, 4th August 2026 \nStart time: 10.00 am               Estimated finish: 12.45 \nStarting point: Car Park at the Dales centre\, Stanhope \nDistance: 7.5 km (4.5 miles); \nTime: 2 hours 45 mins. \nHeight gain 248 m (814 feet) this is achieved mainly in gradual increases apart from the first climb. \nThe walk consists of footpaths\,  pasture\,  woodland and moorland paths.  The nearest  toilets are Stanhope at the Dales Centre’ \nLeader: Richard Bellis. \nAll general enquiries about the group to David Towndrow 07485780121 \nWalks cost £1 to cover mountain rescue contribution. \nEquipment for this walk: walking boots and socks\, waterproofs\, small snack and drink\, walking poles or stick. \nDogs: Dogs are allowed on this walk but must be on a lead. Please note that one field contained young cattle and one farm had a small flock of geese. \nPublic toilets:  Dales centre. OS maps.
