DESCRIPTION:Parkhead and Stanhope Burn \n19 May 2026 \nImportant:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled\, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week.  Please consult the weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk as we are often able to update the website to say if the walk is going ahead the evening before. \nWalk Route: We park near the Parkhead Station House cafe.  From there we walk west along the 1846 railway track\, which was the highest standard gauge railway in England\, before turning south and descending to the Stanhope Burn\, which we cross using an interesting bridge.  There is then a steep but short climb through the heather before we pick up a gravel road which takes us back over the burn. \nA good but steep path takes us up beside the Heathery Burn\, where a large collection of Late Bronze Age weapons and tools was discovered and excavated between 1859 and 1872.  Finally we return to our cars following another railway track which opened on 15 May 1834\, and closed in 1951. \nDate:  Tuesday 19 May 2026 \nStart time: 10.00am.                  Estimated finish time:  12:30p.m. \nDistance c. 9.4 km.                    Height gain: 260m \nLeader: Bill Heslop                     Contact details: Bill Heslop Tel: 07504 663223 \n  \nStarting Point:  The car park at Parkhead Station.  OS Ref: NZ 003 431.  What3Words finally.strapping.name. \nOS Map: Consett & Derwent Reservoir Explorer 307 \nWalks cost £1 to cover costs and mountain rescue contribution. \nTerrain: old railway track and moorland \nToilets: Sorry\, there are none nearby.  Those in the café\, if open\, are for customers only. \nEquipment for this walk: Walking boots and socks\, waterproofs\, small snack and drink.  Walking poles may be helpful. \nDogs: Dogs on a lead are permitted on this walk. \nAccompanied children under 16 and accompanied vulnerable adults are welcome. \nDisclaimer: Everyone taking part in any of our group walks does so at their own risk.  The group works on the same basis as a group of friends who go out walking together.  Walk organisers accept no risk for anyone attending any walk and will not be held responsible for any accident\, injury or loss occurring on a walk or in connection with travel to and from a walk.  None of our leaders is qualified or has first aid training but a basic first aid kit is available.  Participants must read the walk description carefully and assess whether the terrain\, distance and height gain of the walk are within their own and their guests’ capabilities and whether their equipment is suitable.
