DESCRIPTION:Blanchland – Baybridge Tue 2nd June 2026 – Going ahead as planned \nImportant:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled\, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week.  Please consult the weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk to confirm the walk is going ahead.  Note we are often able to update the website the evening before. \nWalk Route: \nFrom Blanchland village hall car park we walk around side of hall and cross road near bridge to bring us onto the path going east beside Derwent River and follow the scenic path to Carrick’s Haugh at which point we leave the path and walk over fields and climb up to Cow Byers Farm\, passing the farm we are out onto open fields with beautiful views before dropping down through woodland to Shildon. We then follow the Pennine Journey road for a short way before turning right on the track towards Coat House Farm\, we then cross fields and head down to Baybridge and then follow the river path back to Blanchland. There are several points to do a shorter walk.  Please note livestock in fields and one field with horses. Turn left along a farm road to Queensbury. Just past the house keep going straight across quite boggy country to the Sedling Vein path. At the top of Middlehope Bank turn right towards Ireshopeburn\, but turn left down a track and then across country towards East Blackdene. It’s a linear walk and will mean a car share from the car park at SJC cattle mart to Killhope Mine. Parking outside the entrance. There’s a steady but not severe climb\, on a gravel road at the beginning of the trail. This is followed by a generally downward journey\, across mainly untrodden green and rough grassland. While there are wooden walkways and gravel tracks on sections\, there’s some uneven ground and in one place a short muddy area. \nThe path offers no easy cut off points in the first 3.5 miles. However\, those wishing a shorter\, flatter walk could join the group\, approximately 2 hours later at Wearhead for the last 3.5 miles along the riverbank to SJC. There is a gentle descent and ascent\, but nothing steep or sustained. In parts the footpaths are poorly maintained. At one point we have agreed with the farmer a possible short detour to avoid a field of cows with their calves. \nThe route heads west through open access woodland from the parking spot and after a short stretch of road heads through the Dryderdale plantation onto moorland. Turning south before St John’s Hall it passes through Doctor’s Gate and then east on a restricted byway to join and follow Stanhope Lane; across the Wolsingham-Hamsterley road we pass through Hoppyland Farm and turn north through fields to ford the Harthope Beck and reach West Shipley Farm. From there\, there will be two options: 1.7 miles on field paths\, or 0.7 miles along the road to return to cars. \nUnfortunately\, there is no obvious circular or easy return route for anyone wishing to walk say 2- 3 miles. Carry on up the (steep) field to the junction at the end of Side Head. This would be the best place to meet up with walkers wishing to shorten their distance\, at about 10.30. We carry on up this track towards Middlehope Lane passing several large\, but passable\, puddles. At Middlehope Lane we turn right and follow the road uphill to the next right turn onto a gravel track. Starting at the car park at the Dales centre\, Stanhope we walk to Newlandside  Hall then on to Parson Byers\, Shittlehope Burn and along Crawley Edge above the quarries before returning to the Dales centre. There is a steep climb of 80 metres after we cross the river Wear near the beginning and a steep downhill section towards the end. DESCRIPTION:Gibson’s Cave and Newbiggin – Going ahead as planned \nTuesday 18th August 2026 \nStarting Point: Bowlees Visitor Centre. 4 miles west of Middleton on Tees on B6277. \nPlease be aware that the road from Westgate to Newbiggin is currently closed for major roadworks and is not scheduled to reopen until well after next week. I recommend journeying to Bowlees either by Bollihope/Middleton if coming from the east or St John’s/ Langdon Beck from the North or West. \nWhat 3 words: riding.instant.inflating \nA varied walk of c.6.5 miles Height gain: 850ft \nWalk Route: Starting with a gentle ascent on a good footpath to look at Gibson’s Cave and Summerhill Force\, we then return to the Car Park and follow another good footpath through the trees up the lower reaches of Hare Hill. Halfway up we then descend towards the River Tees and having crossed it follow it down river along the Pennine Way for ¾ mile until we reach Newbiggin. We then ascend northwards past High Crags and Silver Hill until we reach Moor House. We then descend down the road before turning off and returning to the Car Park via Summary Hill and the Nature Reserve. \nShorter options are available either by not crossing the River Tees or returning directly from Newbiggin. \nStart time: 10.00am. DESCRIPTION:Wolsingham to Thornley circular via Greenwell Edge and Bradley Burn Tue 1 September 2026 \n£1 \nImportant:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled\, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week.  Please consult the weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk to confirm the walk is going ahead.  Note we are often able to update the website the evening before. \nWalk Route: \nThis 8-mile walk provides a mix of woodland\, farmland and quiet country roads. It runs adjacent to the River Tees for approximately 1.5 miles\, where there’s a cut off\, across fields or a retrace. A series of steep gullies\, with steps\, follow for around 0.5 miles. We join the footpath again on the left just over the cattlegrid and follow the path to Bolt’s Law\, with spectacular views on a clear day all the way to the sea and of Newcastle\, we can stop here for a short break. DESCRIPTION:Cowshill Circular – via Sedling Rake\, Newhouse & the Weardale Way \nTue 20th October 2026 \n£1 \nImportant:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled\, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week.  Please consult the weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk to confirm the walk is going ahead.  Note we are often able to update the website the evening before. \nWalk Route: \nFrom the car park we will walk up the track towards Burtree Pasture Mine. Turning E opposite the former mine manager’s house we will then follow a rough track\, steep in places\, alongside the worked-out Sedling Vein onto Sedling Rake. The track ascends rapidly and\, in clear weather\, there are good views looking back towards Killhope and over Burnhope Reservoir. This section of the walk is the former lead ore carriage route from the mine to Rookhope Smelt Mill. The track over Sedling Rake pools water in places so we may need to cross some boggy ground here. On reaching the Ireshopeburn – Rookhope road we will turn south and use this quiet road\, with splendid views of the dale\, to descend to Newhouse and the River Wear.
