Weardale Tuesday Walks.

Willington – Hunwick Station Circular 2nd December 2025

An approximately 6.5 miles, circular walk, along parts of the Weardale Way and the old Bishop Auckland to Willington railway line.

Important:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week.  Please consult the weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk to confirm the walk is going ahead.  Note we are often able to update the website the evening before.

Meeting point: the public car park on the north side of the River Wear, off Stony Bank/Cobey’s Carr Lane, Willington and adjacent to the Jubilee Bridge.

Walk commencing at 1000hrs.

Distance: approximately 6.5 miles

Duration: approximately 3.5 hours

Height gain: 326 feet.

Public toilets: At Car Park.

 

This walk passes along a riverside path, open fields, a disused railway line and urban landscape. There are stiles and gates along the way.

Although the route is generally flat or across slowly rising ground, there is one steep ascent, on steps, of approximately 60 feet at around 1.5 miles from the start of the walk. The walk leaders will advise of alternative routes or a return back along the outward journey will take anyone who wishes to leave at this point back to the car park.

The route is suitable for dogs on leashes.

There will be a snack break during the walk.
