Westgate and Middlehope Burn – Weardale Tuesday Walkers

Important:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week so consult the weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk.  (We are often able to update the website to say if the walk is going ahead the evening before).


Walk Route: Pass the site of ‘Westgate Castle’, then climb gently up a path by the beautiful Middlehope Burn, viewing the impressive remains of lead working as we go.  We then gain height and pass the interesting West Rig Opencut before descending steeply to cross the valley and make our return.

Starting Point:  The roadside car park opposite the entrance to the Weardale Holiday Home Park.  Nearest postcode: DL13 1LJ

OS Map: Consett & Derwent Reservoir Explorer 307 or North Pennines OL31.  (Both cover the area.)

Walks cost £1 to cover mountain rescue contribution

Terrain: Footpaths, grassy tracks and rough pasture.

Toilets: The nearest toilets are in Stanhope.

Equipment for this walk: Walking boots and socks, waterproofs, small snack and drink, walking poles or stick.

Dogs:  Dogs are permitted on this walk.

Accompanied children under 16 and accompanied vulnerable adults are welcome.
