The River East Allen valley from Sparty Lea

 

Important:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled or changed so consult the www.weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk, before travelling.

Walk Route:    A nice mixture of moorland, riverside, meadows and woodland.   The walk climbs up to Sipton Law, down to Old Man’s Bottom, and then follows two attractive sections of the River Allen East on the return.  En route we pass by some interesting mining remains and a ruined bastle house.

Moderate walk  4.5  miles,  700 feet of ascent.

Starting Point:  We meet at Sparty Lea, which is 2.5 miles further down the River East Allen valley from Allenheads, along the B6295.   The Sparty Lea village sign is about 800 yards before the parking area, which is opposite the old Methodist Chapel,  NE47 9UB, and down a slope to the left.

Walks cost £1 to cover costs (mountain rescue contribution, website hosting etc)

Toilets:  There are no public toilets in  Sparty Lea but Northumberland Council has an arrangement with the Hemmel Café in Allenheads to provide toilets in winter when the Council facilities in Allenheads behind the engineering exhibition  are closed.

Equipment for this walk:  Walking boots and socks, waterproofs, small snack and drink, walking poles or stick, hat, scarf, gloves.

Accompanied children under 16 and accompanied vulnerable adults are welcome on this walk.

Dogs:  Dogs are permitted on this walk.
