Steward Shield and Stanhope Burn

Important:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week so consult the www.weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk, before travelling.

Walk Route:  From Parkhead Station we take the track bed of the old Rookhope to Sunderland railway path and then drop down through Steward  Shield to a beautiful and wild stretch of the Stanhope Burn. The return is on the fine Velvet Path and the Crawley Engine track.

Moderate walk,  5.25 miles, ascent: 630 feet.

Starting Point:  Parkhead Station, postcode DL13 2ES  (called Fell Haven on the OS map).  From the Grey Bull at the west end of Stanhope take the B6278 towards Edmundbyers up through Crawleyside Bank.  About a mile after the cattle grid Parkhead Station is signed to the right (on the left side of the road) and there is an old red mining railway truck on the right to mark the entrance to Parkhead Station.  Park 200 yards along the access track.

Walks cost £1 to cover contribution to mountain rescue and website costs.

Toilets:  There are toilets for café customers at Parkhead (if open) or there are public toilets at the Durham Dales centre DL13 2FJ in Stanhope.

Equipment for this walk:  Walking boots and socks, waterproofs, small snack and drink, walking poles or stick, hat and, gloves.

Accompanied children under 16 and accompanied vulnerable adults are welcome on this walk.

Dogs:  Dogs on a short lead are welcome on this walk.
