Stanhope Dene and Crawley Edge

 

A circular walk through Stanhope Dene – Heathery Burn – Crawley Edge – Shittlehope Burn. Approximately 3 hours.

Meet at The Dale’s Centre carpark DL13 2FJ for 10 a.m. start. Toilets in the Dale’s Centre.
We walk west towards Stanhope Old Hall and take the footpath through Stanhope Dene, past old mine workings towards Heathery Burn before heading east to the historic Stanhope and Tyne Railway above Stanhope. Turning south towards Stanhope we pick up the eastward trail above Ashes Quarry and along Crawley Edge. At Jolly Body farm we take the path towards Shittlehope Burn. The path downstream brings us to Front St, Stanhope and a stroll back to the carpark.
Heathery Burn, Crawley Edge and the fields to the south of Stanhope have important Bronze Age history and indicators.
There are a number of potential drop off points along this route please familiarise yourselves with them if you intend to leave the group early.
The ground’s a little rough in places and the ascent is around 250 metres.
Advised kit: suitable walking boots/shoes, waterproofs, (weather dependent), water, sun block, hats, sticks, snacks.
