Walk Route: The walk follows the old railway track, now tarmacked, up wonderful Stanhope Dene, climbs up the Velvet Path, returning with great views along Crawley Edge and beside Ashes Quarry. This is one of Weardale’s best walks and and largely mud free. Good paths and tracks throughout, no stiles. The last part of the walk is around the Ashes Quarry which has a 100 foot drop. Please keep well away from the edge.

Toilets: There are public toilets at Durham Dales Centre.
Equipment for this walk: Walking boots and socks, waterproofs, small snack and drink, walking poles or stick, hats and gloves.
Dogs: Dogs on a short lead are permitted on this walk.
Accompanied children under 16 and accompanied vulnerable adults are welcome
