Salters’ Gate and Sand Edge    This walk is going ahead as planned.

7 October 2025

Important:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week.  Please consult the weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk as we are often able to update the website to say if the walk is going ahead the evening before.

Walk Route: We park at the Salters’ Gate road junction and follow Saltergate Lane north east as far as it goes then turn sharp left to return along the moorland path over Salters’ Ridge.  The latter is also the line of the c. 1250 enclosure of the Bishop’s hunting park, which line we continue to follow south along Sand Edge from which there are fine views.  We then take an irregular path east and north to circuit the heather moorland before we join the delightful the old railway track back to our car park.

A contour walk with only modest climbs and descents.  Distance c. 10.9 km.  Height gain: 115m

Walks cost £1 to cover costs and mountain rescue contribution.

Terrain: Country lane, moorland, grass fields, and old railway track.

Toilets: Sorry, there are none nearby.

Equipment for this walk: Walking boots and socks, waterproofs, small snack and drink.  Walking poles may be helpful.

Dogs: Dogs on a lead are permitted on this walk.

Accompanied children under 16 and accompanied vulnerable adults are welcome.
