High Etherley Circular -Weardale Tuesday Walks – this walk is going ahead as planned

The route: High Etherley – Witton – le – Wear Circular.
Meet at St Cuthberts Church, High Etherley, DL14 0HT for a 10 a.m. start. Parking – near the church.
The route will take us into Toft Hill before turning north down the old coach road to Witton Castle and through its grounds to the River Wear. Crossing to the north side of the river via the old road bridge we ascend concrete steps, to access the Weardale Railway and continue up to Witton le Wear. Passing through the village the path turns south as we climb steadily uphill before turning East to intersect the Etherley incline. Travelling the old incline though Phoenix Row the path crosses the road at Etherley and continues southward along the incline before circling back west into Toft Hill and the starting point.
Length: just over 6 miles
Time: 3 hours
Descent/Ascent: approx 550 feet
Terrain: public highway- rough tracks – tarmac roads.
Public toilets: in Toft Hill.
Break off points along part of the route.
