Doctor’s Gate and  theElephant trees

Walk Route: From the top of Wear Bank, we descend south along the quiet road towards the old Youth Hostel at St John’s Hall and on to Doctor’s Gate. We follow good tracks across open moorland West towards Pikeston Fell, and then North to the ridge line bordering the Wear Valley. Once on the edge we follow good tracks past the Elephant Trees heading East whilst steadily descending.

Those seeking a shorter alternative can follow one of several good tracks heading North to meet the obvious ridge line reducing the overall walk to 5.5Miles or 6.5Miles

A varied walk of c. 8.5 miles               Height gain: 240m.

Starting Point:  From Wolsingham, take the road South over the Wear and up Wear Bank towards Hamsterley. At the top of the hill where the road swings left, carry straight on onto the small road heading up the hill towards St john’s Hall.  Park in the small open area at the junction, of if the area is full, carry on up the tarmac  road between the gorse and park at the top.  We will meet on the junction (grid ref 073,357)

Walks cost £1 to cover mountain rescue contribution.

Terrain: Moorland tracks, gravel and tarmacadam roads.

Dogs:  Ok but on a lead.

Toilets: Toilets are in Wolsingham near Peggottys in Angate Street.
