Dead Friars Walk – Weardale Tuesday Walkers

Dead Friars

Important:  In the event of bad weather walks may be cancelled, changed or rescheduled for later in the same week so consult the www.weardale.uk website from 8am on the morning of the walk, before travelling.  Often we are able to update the website the day before if the walk can go ahead.

Walk Route:  Apart from a short section of rough ground near the start the walk is throughout on well drained gamekepers’ tracks.  This is a high level walk, largely over 1,500 feet, with good views over the Rookhope and Stanhope valleys. There are no steep gradients.  No stiles.

Moderate walk,  6 miles,  850 feet of ascent.

Starting Point:  Parkhead Station, postcode DL13 2ES –  followed by a short car share to the start.  From the Grey Bull at the west end of Stanhope take the B6278 towards Edmundbyers up through Crawleyside Bank.  About a mile after the cattle grid Parkhead Station is signed to the right (on the left side of the road) and there is an old red mining railway truck on the right to mark the entrance to Parkhead Station.  Park 200 yards along the access track.

Walks cost £1 to cover costs (mountain rescue contribution, website hosting etc)

Toilets:    The nearest toilets are in Stanhope at the Durham Dales Centre – but there are toilets at Parkhead if you are a customer.

Equipment for this walk:  Walking boots and socks, waterproofs, small snack and drink, walking poles or stick.

Accompanied children under 16 and accompanied vulnerable adults are welcome on this walk.

Dogs:  Dogs are permitted on this walk
