Rookhope’s Yesterday

Rookhope along with much of the Weardale was once a major industrial centre. At this time the mining of lead, iron and fluorspar was very important to the economy of the Dales. The mines, smelt works and railways dominated the landscape and shaped the people. At one time the Front Street was lined with shops and there were dormitories for the many workers.

In those days the village was thriving and the churches full. Today only the crumbling ruins are visible, but these make great places for photos and to sit and imagine what the village would have been like many years ago. Careful though, caution is always needed when visiting old mine workings!
