Beowulf – Made in Weardale

There is quite a buzz at the moment in Weardale as the first episodes of a new ITV series have begun. The reason for the excitement is that much of the series was filmed in Weardale and some of the extras for the series were recruited locally – and I was also one of them!

There is much excitement too, over the fact that the series may go on for another four or five years and this will help to put Weardale firmly on the map. It will be good for the local economy of course, but especially good for tourism. You never know, such a stunning location as Weardale may just encourage other TV and film companies to come here and use the landscape as the backdrop to any future projects.

The series is good too. It has of course been compared to The Game of Thrones but fortunately it does not have the often disturbing intensity of Games of Thrones, and so is more suitable for family viewing.

So, if you haven’t seen it yet, go find it on your catch-up TV. If nothing else, it is great to see Weardale’s landscape used in such an amazing way.

The series is running on Sundays at 7 pm on ITV.

UPDATE: The series has now finished – unfortunately it was not a BIG success and we are still waiting to hear if the series will be continued…
